Adsense on WordPress.com Blog?

| May 1, 2008 | 14 Comments

WordPress.com is free blog Hosting service and never allowed third party advertising (like Adsense) for users. According to the service managers, advertising has not been available till now because they wanted to avoid “spoiling” the quality of service.

Good News is, WordPress now allows to have Advertising on WordPress.com too with the introduction of Wordads. WordPress has partnered with Federated Media to allow bloggers to monetize their free, hosted blogs on WordPress.com with ads.

Publishers will display advertising in form of banners, pictures and maybe some text that’s very similar to what Federated Media offers some of its other clients. The types of ads will still depend greatly on what kind of content each blog produces.

The company is currently taking signups for anyone who would like to participate in testing the new ad platform.

How to Apply for WordAds

It does look like the program isn’t open to everyone. According to the application form, the criteria for selection for WordAds is:

  • Custom Domain
  • Level of engagement
  • Amount of traffic
  • Quality of content
  • Language used

Like AdSense, there will be set amount bloggers will reach before WordAds sends them a check.

Personally, I think it is wrong to be so restrictive, because in this way Blogger platform will remain good to publish content without many complications for advertising. At the end of the day, what matters is the quality and content type.

Note: This is an updated version (23rd March 2012) of article. It was said that some VIP WordPress.com users had privilege to show Adsense Ads but with introduction of new service by WordPress itself, that is no more possible.
