Spice Mi-300: 3.2 inch Touchscreen Android 2.1 Smartphone at Rs. 16,000

Android market in India is growing at a very rapid pace and the handsets like Xperia X10, Galaxy S i9000 or HTC Desire seems to be appealing a lot to the customers even if their prices are above 25k mark. What if you get a handset having similar characteristics at a price of Rs 16,000?

Spice Mi-300 Android Smartphone

Spice Mi-300 Specs

Well, now it is possible as Spice Mobiles has planned to introduce a whopping 3.2 inch   Android 2.1 powered with HVGA capacitive touchscreen handset at similar prices.

Some other noteworthy attributes of the phone includes the support for WiFI, 3G, Bluetooth v2.0, GPS with AGPS support, multi format Audio/Video player (HD), FM Radio and 5MP camera. The video camera records at 30fps WVGA (MP4, H.263) and 15fps WVGA (H.264). While the video playback is with the default resolution 480 x 320px.

Another impressive feature is Push Mail which is a need of the day. Internal Memory of  Phone is 156MB however it is expandable upto 32 GB using microSD card.

Spice Mi-300 Price and Availability

Introductory price of this device is set to be Rs. 9900 and then it will be available at all leading stores at a price of Rs. 16,999.

My Verdict

I was amazed to see the characteristics and the price of Mi-300. Well, the only thing that I doubt is its built quality. We hope that the handset is as good as the big guns like Xperia X10. Spice Mobiles have always been customer friendly in terms of prices. If you remember, earlier Spice Mobile had stunned the market with its 12MP camera phone at a price range of around Rs. 14,000. If this Android phone hits the market, we believe that it’s going to send some signal to likes of Sony and Samsung to further lower the cost of Android phones. Overall, Spice Mi-300 has killer attributes. What do you have to say about it? Do let us know your views.

  1. That’s really a decent price with good configurations. But am not into Android that much, will give it a look. Thanks for sharing dude. :)

    • Rohit Langde says:

Exactly! Android is spreading and now these Indian companies have started taking interest in it offering cool smartphones at affordable prices. Even if you are new to Android, give it a chance and you will never look back (yes, that’s my experience).

    • Sunny says:

not only that you just go to android market and download some cool application for connectivity and than you will find it is working great.

thinking that why one should spent 15000 rs on other than this lovely configed mobile with just 9990.rs

      • shiv says:

  2. Anil says:

    Hi Rohit,

Thanks for sharing this affordable android phone. This particular phone is advertised as Android 2.1 ready only. Do you know if it comes with 2.1 already? If not, which version it comes with by default?

Also, I do not see any detailed specs on processor, RAM etc, do you have them by any chance?

    Thanks,
    Anil

    • Rohit Langde says:

Even the official page doesn’t speak about the Processor and RAM configuration. I am finding out the exact specs and will update shortly.
The phones comes with Android 2.1 Eclair by default.

      • Anil says:

Thanks Rohit, I will wait for your update.

I was planning to get Samsung Galaxy Spica, which is fairly decent phone. The only drawback I see is with the lack of proximity sensor.

This phone don’t have the same drawback but if I knew the internals better then I can make up my mind. I just hope that this phone at least comes with 256 MB RAM and 600 MHZ processor.

  3. Deepak says:

MI300 is android 2.1 ready. What does it mean? Does it mean — It does not have 2.1 but can be updated to 2.1??

Why most models including this one comes in black color only? Henry Fords are still alive by dozens! We can have any color of handset as long as it is black.

Is there anything new about proximity sensor? Doesn’t all touchscreens have this feature?

  4. Anil says:

    http://www.mobilephone.co.in/201008/two-android-mobile-phones-launched-by-spice-mobiles-in-india-mi410-and-mi300.html

From the above link, looks like this phone indeed is powered by Qualcomm Chipset of 600 MHz processor and 256 MB of RAM.

I will visit Hotspot tomorrow and make the final call. It really looks good on paper so far.

  5. Deepak says:

I wished they had this model in pearly white color too. I bored of black.

  6. Deepak says:

I am currently using HTC Wildfire (android 2.1) & is pretty happy with it. Any comparision & contrast between wildfire and MI300?

My quick comparison between HTC Wildfire and Spice MI-300

      1. CPU
Winner – MI-300 (Qualcomm 528 MHz vs Qulacomm 600 MHz)
      2. RAM
Winner – Wildfire (384 MB vs 256 MB)
      3. ROM
Winner – Unknown (most likely Wildfire or a tie)
      4. Screen
      Winner – MI-300 (360X480 vs 240X360)
      5. Camera
      Tie (5 MP with Flash)
      6. Price
      Winner – MI-300 (INR 10000 vs INR 15000)

Overall, MI-300 is better than Wildfire except RAM department. For the price, I am not complaining though.

      • Rohit Langde says:

Thanks Anil for the comparison.. Your contribution on Blogsolute will really help readers to choose between Android Smartphones in this range.

        • sachin singh says:

I’m using spice mi-300 since lasth few weeks.. its a nice android phone but the only weak point is its RAM which is not mentioned anywhwere.. using many RAM monitoring applications, I came to know that it just have 160 m.b. of RAM( I knw ram is always in multiples of 8).. it is difficult to manage RAM since the RAM drains out and the phone restarts itself..
This one is also the answer to the user’s who report that their phone is re-booted or switched off without any notification..

      • Ahzam says:

I bought the MI 300, yesterday it came with android 1.6. and there is no way it can be upgraded to 2.1 as of now. I am not sure when the upgrade will be availble. With 1.6 it is an ok phone now that great.
Its fast responsive, but the display is no where compared to Nokia, Samsung or HTC. The camera is very bad and bluetooth supports only headset profile as of now , i.e. no bluetooth transfers possible. it took me hours to sync my contact from N79 on to this phone.
The battery was drained in less than 24 hours of heavy GPRS usage and exploration on phone :)
Unless 2.1 upgrade is available it is not that exciting!!

    • Vipul says:

Deepak, the only drawback i see About HTC Wildfire is its poor resolution, which is not expected from HTC.Although its not a bad piece at price of 14000-15000.As a android developer i would always give it 4.5/5.00.
To speak about Spice the one thing i observed is the ram provided is very low.although the processor speed is decent.but when u expect fast and real time performance the ram comes into picture.so the multitasking on this phone will be not as impressive as it should be.

  7. Deepak says:

Anil, Thanks for the comparative data. Its really helpful.

  8. ashish says:

man it’s available at rs 9990 not 16000 ok… company says that other company offer same smart phone at rs 16000

Any idea how long the introductory offer for price going to stay?.Also i need some info on how the after sales service of spice mobile phones is,in general.

    • techie says:

I think that even Rs.9990 price is too high.

The quality of the screen is poor, it shows clear sign of colour banding.

The battery backup is really low, though they claim it has 1200 mAh battery. The backup time I am saying is without wifi or EDGE turned on.

It has really low memory, though the processor is strong enough.

The camera is almost useless. It is of really poor quality. You cannot use it even for barcode scanning. I have never seen a camera of so poor quality, in such a expensive device.

AGPS is good but I could not connect to the satellites with the real GPS. Possibly I have to move out of town to get a signal.

It came preinstalled with Android 1.6 but there is no indication that when it will be upgraded to 2.1. Not in documentation neither the store people could provide the information.

You cannot use bluetooth for file sharing unless it is upgraded to Android 2.1. This is a known problem of Android 1.6.

I would advice you not to pay more than Rs. 6K for this device.

  19. I bought this phone on 22nd August itself as soon as I saw it on the net. Till now it feels good. But at times the phone restarts by itself. I don’t know whether it’s due some app I’ve been running, or some other issues. Right now it has got Android 1.6 as its stock version, and currently waiting eagerly for the 2.1 update.

  20. Murali says:

Today I purchased MI300 from Global Access at an introductory price of 10000 including VAT.
It has all the features that you can find in any mobile which would cost you around 16K to 20K.
If you are looking for a smart phone with 3G,GPS,WIFI,PUSH Mail and Document viewer this is the write phone for you.
If you are a music lover and you like taking pictures this is not the right one. Because the 5MP camera does not live up to the expectation. The picture quality is average.
    The audio is also average.
The build of the mobile is not that appealing. The audio jack just on top of the mobile is not at all good it spoils the whole look of the mobile.
The battery draines faster than I expected when you are using applications. But that is expected in such mobiles. But other wise battery life is ok.
coming to speed, it proves that it has 600Mhz processor.
Optical track ball is an added advantage.
Overall its worth the money you pay. But the only question I have in my mind is, does it last long like NOKIA or Sony Ericsson?

  21. Gaurav Pandey says:

    Hi,

I had brought this phone for 9990 from a hotspot in delhi 3 days back.

Let me tell you some pros and cons:

    Pros:
    1. Touch user interface is very good all thanks to google.
    2. Phone doesnt hang in last three days.
    3. Battery backup is average but better than Galaxy Spica.
    4. Screen resolution is satisfactory.
    5. The best part is phones processing speed.

    Cons:
    1. Do not go by claims of the company as camera is not at all good a 5MP camera gives an output of of 2MP.
    2. Runs on android 1.6 but company claims it to upgrade to android 2.1
    3. Screen resolution is good but not 480*320 as advertised.
    4. No FM radio.
    5. GPRS and Edge connectivity problem.

All in all its a good phone for beginners of android but not a perfect phone for business and multimedia use.

If you are going to buy this than please have a look on galaxy3 & galaxy5 before buying as all of them are of same range.

    I will keep posting

  22. Rohit Langde says:

Reading Reviews by Gaurav, Murali and Techie, I feel that Spice has taken a good step by providing 600MHz processor but couldn’t provide a good quality Screen but has Cool User Interface.
Well, The Interface will be more improved when Upgrade for Stock ROM (Android 2.1) comes but the design and architecture has to be good enough to look like a smartphone :)
Battery problem is same in case of all Android powered phones but here in case of Spice Mi-300, May I know the Talktime in Hours with and without Wi-Fi / EDGE connectivity? It’s the powerful processor of phone which results in faster draining of battery.

  23. Palash says:

I have galaxy 3, and ts great!
i think it must b btr than this spice phone
and it costs ony rs. 12,000

  24. techie says:

I am also facing a problem of frequent rebooting. Sometimes it reboots during a ongoing call. This is very annoying.

Possibly the problem is due to low memory. I have noticed this problem increases if the free internal memory comes below 80MB.

This phone is not even worth for Rs. 6K .

The worst part is, there is no support from the manufacturer. There is no discussion forum or mailing list for the users of this phone. We are not getting any information about bug fixing or future upgrades from the company. This is unbelievable for such a costly product.

    • Sachin says:

      Hi techie,
This one is also the answer to the user’s who report that their phone is re-booted or switched off without any notification..

it is difficult to manage RAM since the RAM drains out and the phone restarts itself..
Spice should give some support for this kind of issues.. I tried to contact spice for the solution of this problem but surprisingly I got no technical support n was asked to contact the service center..
Ultimately I found the temporary solution for this problem that “task killer” packages available on the market can solve it..

Guys, Bought this phone from Spice HOT SPOT a week back…No doubt the touch is good n even the applications but the drawbacks are camera n battery…Camera doesnt give you a picture quality of more than 2 MP and battery doesnt even stay for a day….radio FM is not there an d bluetooth you cant use before it gets upgrded to 2.1…
i mean i m ok with rest of the cons but the only thing that bothers me the most is battery life….

  29. Nikhil says:

I have recently purchased a Spice MI-300. It’s advantages over an iphone are as follows >
    1. Highly responsive touchscreen ( much better than iphone and samsung galaxy )
    2. 5 MP camera with flash
    3. presence of trackball for navigation
    4. android phone ( applications can be installed from android marketplace )

Other key features include > 3G, WiFi, Push Mail, GPS, 3.5 mm Jack, quadband.

Some of it’s disadvantages include > absence of FM, video
    telephony absence, bluetooth issues

But overall, it’s a very good phone at just INR 9990. It’s a 35k phone in just 10k.
Amazing features at a very good price – keep it up Spice !!!

First of all thank you all for so many comments on this phone. I too am planning to buy this spice mi-300 but have some queries –

    1) can it be easily upgraded to android 2.1 later and that too without any extra price.
    2) will bluetooth and FM work fine when upgraded to android 2.1
    3) MOST IMP. QUES — when using this model normally …. how long will battery last. how much is its max possible battery backup if i dont use wi-fi. ??
    4) can we get any NEW battery which lasts longer even though it costs extra??

Please help me solve my queries

    Thanks

Welcome to World of Android ! I own a Samsung Galaxy i7500 Android mobile. I have to say google has changed the way of mobile by introducing Android for Mobiles. Now Spice has come up using this Android, im sure its gonna bring lot of buzz in mobile industry to bring Smart phones at much lower price.
Coming to Battery draining, all android apps sit in the memory, because there is no Exit option for applications. You need to install AdvancedKiller application from market. It shows all open apps sitting in memory, Just kill those apps, and you have your battery saved :) . Try it and drop in your comments. I love to talk anything about Android .

    Finally I purchased the phone…. It’s good!

  36. Ahzam says:

After a week of use of the phone, I am getting used to it. Overall it is a good effort from Indian phone company to come up with a harware that runs a standard OS, with decent features in it.

Here are the highlights of the phone:

    1. Android, lots of applications are available with various options. I got few features by way of 3rd party apps, i.e. SMS call blocker, call log , and security applications. But Unless we get to 2.1 it would be full featured, the phone is expected to get an upgrade to 2.1 by end of Oct, 2010 (source http://igyaan.in/2010/09/spice-mi-300-android-2-1-device-first-look-unboxing/)

    2. The accelerometer based games work wonder on the device

    3. Decent sensitive display, brightness and light sensors work very well.

    4. It feels good in hand, it is not too wide or large to hold, if you have not used a touch screen phone before it will take a little getting used to it.

    5. Voice clarity is ok, not that great, can not be compared with any other leading phone brands.

    6. Spice seems to have good service network, but I do not know of their service quality.

Points I do not like about the phone

    1. The camera is not as good, compared to 5 MP N series cameras, the response time for camera is low, bad for both stills and videos. At least I can’t use it to take quality pictures.

    2. Not so good build quality, looks and feels plastic. I am not sure how long the buttons or even the touch sensitivity will last.

    3. I faced issued with mobile data network connectivity (EDGE), network connection went down often on this phone, I am not sure if that is a software issue of hardware issue, specially while dealing with “Android Market” software. I had to do most app download on Wifi.

    4. Battery Life, doesn’t exceed 35 hours even with minimal use, which is against the company claims of battery life.

    5. Android, 1.6 has couple of issues, i.e. active calls go in background unintentionally, no Bluetooth OBEX or DUN support, dial up networking is only available through USB cable.

In general, the phone is usable as a smart phone comes with office document readers and exchange email client, along with all other email clients. I tested it on BSNL 3G, i got a fair download and upload speed on 3.5 G network of about 1.2Mbps download and about 150kbps upload.

I would recomend this phone for people who would like to explore android and its features, a good experimental phone for it’s price, with decent hardware.

  37. Anurag aggarwal says:

I have purchased mi-200 Spice Mobile Phone.
Using it for 2 weeks now.
Best part is Display and Speed of Phone is very good.
Seems better than galaxy if OS is not compared.

Biggest Problem is EDGE connection. It stops downloading.
i need to put Phone in AirPlane mode and then revert.
After this only EDGE again starts downloading.

At few time phone restarted also automatically. At one instance phone was found turned off even if battery was full ( in morning)

    2nd problem is Battery
Batter us 1230mah only compared to 1500mah from Samsung.
Even if difference is not big but it seems like Camera quality( Claimed 5MP but actually poorz) battery is not even 1230mAh.

Do any other faced EDGE/GPRS problem im Mi-300?

  38. Sachin says:

  39. Bala says:

Folks, when will android 2.1 be available for download? Any idea? Cheers!

  40. NR says:

Hey All mi 300 Users – Happy News for You Guys – Android 2.1 is now available at SPICE web site. Check the below link –
Most of the problems are solved now by doing update.
    http://www.spiceglobal.com/SpiceMobiles/Model.aspx?Id=167

  41. Have already installed the 2.1 Eclair update 4 hrs back.

The entire update process took 5-10 mins hardly, once you obtain the official update file.
The letdown was the fact that you need a Windows system to apply the update. There was no support for updating from Linux or Mac.
For details on how to apply the update, you may get this pdf file. http://www.spicecorp.in/SpiceMobiles/displaymanual.aspx?id=1691e12b-28da-40f0-b34a-c7f925eca455.pdf

The update process removes all your phone data (the date present on the phone memory, not the sd-card). So, make sure to back up any relevant data you may need, prior to proceeding for the update.

My Contacts were already synced with my Gmail account, so I just proceeded to go for the update directly.

Now, it’s bye bye Donut and welcome Eclair. Things looking good until now. :)

I wonder whether we’ll get any future Android updates or not!!

    • Rohit says:

      Hi Subhranath Chunder ,

Can you please tell me the process how you updated from donut 1.6 to eclair 2.1 as i m trying to upadte it viat the update available at spice’s website, but while updating after 5-10 minutes it says that updating encountered a problem please remove battery and reconnect again while pressing up volume key, camera button and power button.

i done the same but again same problem itried 3-4 times but its giving same problem again and again.

anyole who upadted also welcomed to answer it….
      thanks in advance

      • Saurabh says:

Hey guys after the update the processor speed is now locked at 480Mhz.did anyone noticed a lag in performance, its coz of the decrease in clock speed…Any solution to get it back to 600Mhz….????

        • Rohit says:

          hi saurabh,

can u tell me the procedure how u updated ur phone as due to the problem mentioned in above comment i m unable to update. do u have any solution then please provide me…thanks

          • Saurabh says:

Just go to spice website, find spice mi300 & under user manuals u will find a complete guide on how to update.it gives u step by step instructions.Follow that & ur phone will be updated within 10 minutes

        • Mithun Katula says:

ya saurabh even i have noticed the lag and whn i checked through quadrant i realised tht they have nwunderclocked the processor to 480 i think this is to save on battery…….there is a way to reclock but tht wud need rooting and may void warranty so im nt considering tht option as of nw…….and the biggest problem i feel is tht they havnt yet solved the restart issue whn we play videos….

  42. adk says:

that’s a very cool device!! camera not good!! but other performance is very good and price man you won’t get that much in 9990rs in others

    • Abhi says:

      Hi,

Is restart problem resolved after upgrade to 2.1? or does it persist?

Can someone tell pros of samsung galaxy 3 over spice mi 300? (apart from the FM radio)?

I am not able to decide whether to go for mi 300 or galaxy 3.. :-(

      Thanks,
      Abhi

It depends on how you want to use your android phone..
If you want to get into hacking and tweaking you android phone to do more things, its best to go for a cheaper one.
For me, MI-300 was a good candidate for rooting and doing more stuff, at this cost i am ready to take risk of keeping my 10k at stake….
check my blog for rooting MI-300
        http://albert-david.blogspot.com/2010/10/spice-mi-300.html

        Happy Hacking :-)

I think mi300 is a rebadged motorola quench xt3 302 that sold in singapore and malaysia. To transfer contacts or files faster using bluetooth, you should use bluetooth apps.

    • androidfan says:

This phone is a good effort by a local Indian company but it could have been a lot better.

This Android phone from Spice and even the one from Videocon is a ripoff compared to
Orange’s San Francisco (ZTE Blade) with 512MB Ram and a way better screen resolution along with better build quality. All for approx 99 pound that is roughly Rs 7500.

    • mkay says:

Using Quadrant Standard (Benchmarking App), I found out that Spice MI300 is only running at max 480 MHz. Shouldn’t it be running at 600MHz? Is the 480MHz is the safe limit for the MSM7227?

      • Mithun Katula says:

dude they have clocked down the processor in 2.1 update…..u might be gettin a 2.1 preinstalled so u may think its 480 bt the processor is actually 600 mhz bt alas to save battery life the company has clocked it to 480…..

MI700 or Olivepad have android 2.2 while MI300 is only 2.1. Does anyone know why they didn’t install the 2.2 on mi300? Both have same processor speed.

      @Rohit and all,

can anyone tell me that if this phone can be connected to an adhoc network of a laptop to use the shared internet over the network? PLZ REPLY…..

    • Anonymous says:

yes.. it does…I have just bought this phone…it’s fantastic…there’s only one drawback..the camera quality.

  48. emkay says:

MI300 comes with EDOF type camera which doesn’t work with barcode scanner apps.

  49. emkay says:

No, it’s not dual sim. I made a ‘mistake’ in buying this phone. Don’t get me wrong. The phone work flawlessly. I forgot to take under consideration regarding the screen. I should choose phone that have “Gorilla screen” and solid aluminum chassis.

My screen cracked and the replacement cost would be almost half the cost of the phone itself.
The phone still working fine even with cracked screen. Although the phone that comes with gorilla glass and aluminum body will cost more but it will be worth it.
