Man, i got i the red x over my battery icon also in windows 7, after watching a dvd for about 2 hours with my acer aspire 57xx plugged in and fully charged. the battery is about 2 yrs old, but the first time i noticed this problem after the dvd.
next time i will consider unplugging the battery and view dvd running it on the power only, soewhere i heard this might protect your battery.....
before i buy another battery i will try charging it to 100%, then shut down, restart in safe mode and let it idle with no power cord just the battery... apparently this iwll recalibrate the battery.... then see what happens normally

If you used to get full backup before using Windows 7 on Laptop then you can say "yay, Windows 7 may be causing problem" but I don't think so as Microsoft has now cleared up all confusion.
As far as official blog posting is concerned, Microsoft has received only 12 customer service incidents which are seen in systems older than ~1.5 years.

May be your Laptop Battery is really degraded or near to degrade. Your problem is different from this as Windows isn't giving you any notofication.

I am going through the same problem, my laptop's battery backup is reduced to 50% after installing windows 7. Although it does not show any battery replacement message, but charging halts at 53%. I am confused so as to windows 7 is causing some problem or the problem is of battery itself.
