Bhuvan – India’s Online Earth Mapping service

Today Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has unveiled Indias first map navigation online web tool , known as “BHUVAN”. Bhuvan can be cosidered as  rival application to Google Earth and wikimapia.

Bhuvan promises us to give better 3-D satellite images of all territory regions throught India and sub continent. Like Google Earth user can move maps  from place to place , can zoom it along with the permission of grab, spin to complete access. Bhuvan opens the door to graphic visualisation of digital geospatial India.

For the Indian national people , Bhuvan  software will be a freeware. ISRO’s bhuvan is part of Chandrayaan mission recently launched  by India. Main aim of it is to provide useful information to deal with issues like floods, famines and Education. Bhuvan comes up with immense quality of visualization having  10m zoom in  level from surface of Earth while Google is providing 200m  of  zoom level resolution. A tracking and mapping antenna which is placed in Chennai will be used for advanced 3D mapping and navigation.

Indian IT giant TCS played major role in this venture along with other IT companies including WIipro ,Infosys and Mahindra Satyam. Bhuvan will  feature a multi layer information mapping unlike Google Earth having single layer mapping only. ISRO is also planning to update map information every year.

For accessing bhuvans online web tool :

1) You have to register on its website you can register now.

2) After successful registration you will asked to download Bhuvans plugin which will be comprised of 10.76 MB plugin software.

3)You will also need DirectX 9.0 and and MS .NET framework 2.0 or higher version

The damn thing doesnt work. After I login , it keeps taking me to the same page over and over and over. So called IT super power, but the website just sucks.!!! and it installs some third party software called TerraExlplorer. Now I dont know if the whole thing has really been developed by a bunch of desis ???

    @Karthik, Karthik , have you tried for IE 6 if not do it now. I download that plugin successfully on IE6. If still problem arise please let me know.

Sounds great. It’s good to see someone give Google a run for it’s money. I won’t register right now, seeing as how I don’t even use Google Earth, but I will keep it in mind when I have the need.

This site sucks. It reflects what we in India are capable of. I can not believe ISRO was ok with this sucky website. I feel embarassed.

This is not even anywhere of google earth 10? resolution looks 1000 m or more
it is just like the maps in atlas… really Suks waste of time
