How to Upgrade Samsung Galaxy Ace to Gingerbread 2.3.3 [Video Tutorial]

If you own an Ace and want to upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.3 or higher versions, then you can easily upgrade within few minutes. This method will also work for flashing other Official ROM’s on Galaxy ACE variants. If you are not in any hurry of latest updates or in mood to take risk then you can wait for the official update via Kies. But if you cannot wait to upgrade then follow these simple steps to upgrade.

Things Needed to Install Gingerbread on Ace

Update: Gingerbread 2.3.6 ROMs are available for all variants of Galaxy ACE. Download the latest ROM files from here.

To flash your Ace with new firmware on windows you will require ODIN. If you are downloading One Package, you will also need to download the OPS file separately.

If you face problems and your phone does not get detected by windows after switching off, download and install Samsung USB drivers for Galaxy ACE on windows.

Setting Up Odin

Once these files are downloaded extract the files. Odin is a portable application hence can be brought up with a single click. Remember to take care of files that you are going to put in Odin. Open the firmware folder which you just extracted. You will find 5 files namely(name varies from ROM to ROM):

APBOOT_S5830XXKP8_CL143019_REV03_user_mid_false.tar.md5

CODE_S5830XXKP8_CL143019_REV03_user_mid_false.tar

Cooper_v1.0.ops

CSC_S5830SERKP8_CL143019_REV03_user_mid_false.tar.md5

MODEM_S5830XXKP8_CL143019_REV03.tar.md5

Open odin and point OPS, BOOT, Phone, PDA and CSC files from the firmware folder as follows.

OPS- Cooper_v1.0.ops

BOOT- APBOOT_S5830XXKP8_CL143019_REV03_user_mid_false.tar.md5

Phone- MODEM_S5830XXKP8_CL143019_REV03.tar.md5

PDA- CODE_S5830XXKP8_CL143019_REV03_user_mid_false.tar

CSC- CSC_S5830SERKP8_CL143019_REV03_user_mid_false.tar.md5

Pointing these files in Odin completes the configuration part. There is no need to change any other settings. Before proceeding to the next step make sure that Samsung Kies is not running, if so close it.

For One Package Flashing

If the ROM file you downloaded is a one package flasher, i.e consists only of a .tar file. In this situation select the OPS file and check the one package installation box in Odin. Then select the package you have downloaded.

Preparing Galaxy Ace for Flash

Remove the SIM card and SD card from the phone. now what you have to do is start the phone in download mode. To do this, while you are switched off press and hold the following buttons in sequence.

Middle Menu Button+ Power Button+ Down Volume Buttom. Make sure you do not disturb the sequence. Else other modes may come up. Once the phone boots in download mode the phone setup is ready.

Flashing Galaxy Ace with Gingerbread

Now connect the phone to your computer using data cable. You will find some drivers installing and Odin will automatically identify connection com port. Ensure that the data cable is fixed properly so that connection is not lost in between the process.

When all the above things are done, Click on the start button. Wait till the process gets over. You can see process status at left hand corner of Odin. The phone will be restarted automatically and will take bit time to finally start with Gingerbread.

The default language of this Firmware is not English, if you want to change it to English, go to settings and select the fifth last option. There you can select the language of your choice.

Ace Gingerbread cannot be rooted using previous applications like the Super One Click which rooted previous versions easily. I will update it as soon as I get a way to root it.Taking screenshots i.e holding Back key + Menu button works without being rooted.

There are no problems in the firmware and every thing is working properly. If you have noticed lag in contact menu in Froyo, this may solve your problem as i did not find any such lags. There are many other small performance improvements.

Still Confused about upgrading? Well, you can watch this video tutorial to go through the flashing process and also have a glimpse of Gingerbread.

@Gopal: Well i am also new to Android, just a week with ace… Go in the Wireless and network settings then go to “Tethering and portable hotspot”… Here you have various methods to share your phones internet connection with computer through usb cable or you can also create a hotspot..

it keeps getting stuck at ‘com map porting’ any solution will be great.. i have tried the following.. ‘restart my pc,pull out the batery, changing usb ports, giving the phone arround 3 minits to sync with the com before i press start on odin’

btw odin says my phone is detected.. and it doesnt seem to have the word above ‘Odin Multi Downloader (GT-S5830)’it just remain the same as ‘Odin Multi Downloader (Android)’

Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you can tell me if this upgrade process wipe the phone? For example, SMS messages and notes get removed? Since my phone is currently to use my Gmail account, do I need to set up all over again?

Cheers.
