Finding What to Edit

On frontend we can see where changes have to be made. Now, we have to figure out how is it coded in backend.

To do that, you can either view Page Source (Press CTRL+U) or use Web Developer tool to inspect elements. Though Firefox has a feature but I prefer Chrome Developer tool.

Just right click on element you want to edit and select Inspect Element. Browser will show you the code responsible for the selected appearance.

Where to Edit

Now, you have found the code which has to be changed but you do not know in which file it is written. If it is a obvious thing like “Logo”, it will be surely in header.php.

For those, who have basic understanding about WordPress themes structure, it will be easy to guess but sometimes with some themes, things can get little complicated.

So to end the guessing game, I suggest a tool which can look for text string in multiple text files from a folder. It is called FileSeek. Just enter the code you are looking for in query and specify folder/path where theme files are stored.

How to Edit

Even Notepad will do but we are dealing with codes so, a sophisticated Code editor is recommended. I prefer Sublime Text 2 for the purpose which has color markups and nice interface with easy navigation features.

That’s all. Only thing now you need is intelligence and luck (in case of newbie) so that you don’t screw up.

Appearance – This is kind of different way to show or I would say flaunt Related posts. Related posts are shown as sliding dialog box with thumbnails as page is scrolled down. It looks very wonderful and reader never misses looking at it and it never fails to catch attention.

Thumbnail Source – As the author of code says, it only looks for Featured image attached to the post and displays it as thumbnail.

How to Install YARPP Templates

1. Coding stuffs

Archive contains 3 files:

1. custom.css (.txt) – Paste the code of this file into your theme stylesheet. (Used for styling / can be customized to suit theme)
   Some themes have Custom style sheets so prefer that instead of modifying primary stylesheet.
2. functions.php (.txt) – Paste the code of this file in to functions.php of Theme (This registers the thumbnail size)
3. yarpp-template.php – Copy this file into Theme Folder. (This is the Template file)

2. Generating Thumbnails

Though, we have mentioned the thumbnail size to be used but that won’t be generated automatically. Instead you’ll need to use a plugin such as Viper007Bond’s Regenerate Thumbnails to go back through your attachments and create the thumbnails.

3. Activating YARPP Template

Go to YARPP Settings and tick on Display using Custom Template and then select the template from drop-down menu. Save the settings to activate.

I was shocked to hear that some of our Readers were facing problems accessing our site. The top antivirus programs namely Kaspersky and Avast! blocked certain webpages saying it contained HEUR:Trojan.Script.Generic and JS:Iframe-FI [Trj] respectively.

No Matter How much people trust in you or your site, it is never more than the Antivirus they use. Reliability of site is in question when such incident happens and remedial action to remove Virus / Trojan from WordPress has to be taken immediately.

So, here is how I tackled Trojan off my site and cleaned up completely.

How was Malware Script Injected?

Most common type of attack is XSS (Cross-site scripting) which enables attacker to inject malicious codes into webpage. In my case, there was a site which consisted of few static HTML pages and through which Attacker got access and did cross-site scripting.

Another attempt could be of Hacking so, it is recommended to contact with Host to investigate if your Password is stolen.

Detect Malicious code

Use Web Service called Unmask Parasites to find suspected malicious code on infected page. After scanning the page using it, you may get the idea where exactly the code exists (if any). Likewise, check theme files and Plugin files if you have already guessed the file.

Scanning service won’t tell where exactly the malware is injected but if you are wise enough and have some know-how about your WordPress installation then chances are that you will find it out.

Most Prone Areas are: Theme Functions or Plugin Files.

Nothing was detected. Site is Clean?

Sometimes, Antivirus Programs reports false-positives on certain webpage. It means, though, the page is clean but program detects some script or iframe on page as suspected malware.

If you are very much sure that no cross script attack or hacking was taken place then, you can report the specific antivirus company about it. Here is a list of Email IDs where you can report officially.

In my case, problem was only with Avast! Webshield and Kaspersky Internet Security so, I reported both of them. Kaspersky promptly replied with the malicious code which was said to be there according to their analysis and couldn’t be detected by Unmask-Parasites.

Now, you have to hunt down all elements of that page to find the malicious code and remove it.

How to Clean WordPress Site from Virus / Trojan

Still, couldn’t find the trojan code on any page element then only option left is to make full clean-up. This involved re-installation of WordPress site completely. It is because, sometimes, code is hidden in WordPress core files and investigating each one of them will take days and doesn’t guarantee success.

1. Backup Database and Image directory.
2. Write Names of List of Plugins installed.
3. Delete Complete Site Directory.
4. Make Fresh WordPress Installation.
5. Download Theme from Official or Trusted source and Upload.
6. Re-install All Plugins.
7. Restore Database and Image Directory.

I used Automatic Backup Plugin to Backup Database and Restore it Faster Using Amazon S3. Benefit of using this plugin: Everything is done on server side, no downloading or backup of file on Local Computer. Site was up and running within 8-10 minutes.

Problem with above Plugin is: Cannot be used for large database (more than 64MB) due to Memory Limits by Host. Also, not everybody has Amazon S3 account. Alternatively, I recommend using MyBackupBox which lets you backup Database to Dropbox.

What you need to Backup

1. A self hosted WordPress Blog.
2. A Dropbox account. Incase you don’t have one signup here and get 2GB free disk space.

How to perform the Complete Backup

1. Download and install wp Time Machine in your WordPress Blog.
2. Now open the above plugin page and provide your Dropbox account email and password along with the name of the directory where you want the backup.
   
3. Wait for the backup process to finish. It will take time according to your backup size.
4. Open your Dropbox account to find the folder where you wanted your backup.
5. The folder will have five files that are
   • A compress file containing all your WordPress files and media.
   • Your Database SQL backup file.
   • Your htaccess file.
   • Instruction file as to how to restore all the data.
   • One click shell script for automated backup.

The best thing about this backup is that you don’t have to worry about it at all as Dropbox is any time reliable than you local disk and other backup service and is completely free to use. Though I have said SugarSync is better but at the moment there is no WordPress backup solution available on it.
