1. Difficult Keyboard Control

Out of the box, hot keys for VLC are very confusing or uncomfortable I will say. I prefer jumping forward by pressing “Right Arrow” which is obvious to many of you. VLC is totally different in this case, you need to press combination of keys.

2. Boring Interface

This is the reason why many users do not prefer Media Player Classic which takes you back to the era of Windows 98. VLC has recently did some work on appearance and brought Skin feature but lacks modernity.

3. No external Codec support

VLC has inbuilt codec support and doesn’t support any codec or filters outside their library. If something cannot be decoded by its own codec library, it cannot be played on VLC. That’s a rare possibility but what about performance?

There are some audio streams like AC3 which can be decoded by some codec to give better sound quality than the one inbuilt in VLC. Also, problem can be noticed while seek positioning HD videos. VLC lags or do not properly positions in case of forwarding or moving backward. This is because, though the codec has capability to decode but it is not the best choice.

4. Subtitle Editor

5. Remote Control app for Android

Once the format is selected, you can set the aspect ration and video quality. The final output Video resolution is shown just below the quality settings. Select the file output destination on your local drive.

Photo Slideshow Preview

You can now have a quick preview of the final video. Now you can proceed towards the final step i.e. Create Photo Slideshow with Music. Click on the Make Slideshow button. You will again get the option to set video quality and save location. By default the settings will the the one that you have already configured in previous step.

Final Slideshow Rendering

Rendering of the slideshow takes some time. The time taken depends totally on the selected quality of video and additional effects. To process 31 photos with full quality and effects it took 14 Minutes on Core i7 3630.

For Audio, I use Windows Media player but thought of giving it a try. Here are some differences I noticed: GOM Audio player definitely has a beautiful interface even the default skin. While WMP default interface is not so cool but you have access to variety of skins.

GOM Audio player has inbuilt ID3 Tag editor support making it easy to correct Media file info then and there with one click.

Power Manager can Shutdown or take your computer to Sleep mode automatically at specified time. This is helpful for people who like to fall asleep while listening music.

If minimized, you can get playback controls from taskbar itself without restoring the player window. You can either enable mini player mode (missing in WMP 12) or hover mouse to get playback buttons.

Advanced users can tweak DSP settings and customize reverb level, frequency and delay as well as enable and configure the 3D surround. You can also use Winamp 2.x DSP plugin folder.

One thing I most liked about it is the Keyboard Shortcuts. They have kept the same one as in GOM Media player so, it went easy for me to control without learning anything new.

Talking about the Audio file compatibility, GOM Audio player can play almost all popular audio media including MP3, WAV, WMA, FLAC and as well as less used ones, such as MID and APE. Also, it has capability to play Internet Radio, comes with inbuilt stations.

GOM Player is my default media player for Videos playback but unfortunately, it doesn’t support Bluray playback. Then, I tried the most trusted and versatile media player – VLC.

But then, VLC too has its own problem with Bluray playback. Let’s face it and fix it.

VLC Media Player

VLC supports Bluray Disc playback on Windows 8. Regular Bluray discs can be played seamless without necessity of downloading and installing codec.

For some Bluray Discs, especially for the playback of encrypted Bluray Discs on Windows 8, you will need a small work around. If VLC throws error like:

Your system AACS decoding library does not work. Missing keys?
Your input can’t be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘bluray:///G:/’. Check the log for details.

To fix this, go to http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/ and get the KEY files necessary to encode it.

One thing has to be taken into account that VLC doesn’t have the ability to load the menus. You can only watch the main movie on you blu-ray and that’s it.

Daum PotPlayer

Another free solution to play Bluray Discs on Windows 8 is using Daum PotPlayer. Created by the team who developed KMPlayer, it is able to play almost all media formats seamlessly.

The interface is quite tricky, and the program is designed for those who are familiar with the music and with the notation programs. Supports most of formats of digital sheet.

8. NoteWorthy

A program of music notation-looking old-fashioned, but pretty cheap. The good news is that it is compatible with all Windows operating systems since Windows 95, and runs easily even on very old PC. It offers the traditional functions of a score editor, and toolbars can be placed at will anywhere in the interface.
