Other highlights of this gadget are: the screen of 4.7 inches AMOLED qHD Display (960×540 pixels), a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, 512 MB of RAM and an 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.3 megapixel on front. The device runs Android 4.1, better known as Jelly Bean, and features a large variety of colors.

Don’t know what does it means for Motorola or Apple but it has surely hurt the feelings of ZTE who also announced their phone to be thinnest smartphone. ZTE Grand S is the name of phone unveiled at CES 2013 and company claimed their 6.9 mm thick device to be thinnest in the world.

That’s a difference of merely a half millimeter. And that makes ZTE Grand S to be second thinnest phone in the world.

Rumor says that Huawei is also planning to announce the world’s thinnest smartphone during this CES. Let’s see what they have to be served.

New entry and Youngest in the Map application field. Company ditched Google maps from their device to make place for its own. They are simply bad, even Tim Cook apologized for Apple Maps mistake. Consistent improvements have been made since then to correct the wrong data. But is it enough to be able to compete against the other two giants? The answer is still NO. The satellite images are greatly improved and the weird errors have been removed, but Apple Maps offers simply just less than Google and Nokia.

About half a year has been passed since the launch of the Galaxy S3 and Samsung has once again raised the bar for smartphones. Over 20m S3’s have been sold to date and still counting remaining in-terrored by Sammy’s loss of $ 1.05b to Apple. Heck, its sales even increased by 15% after lose to Apple and launch of iPhone 5.

A friendly reminder before we start: I’ve been enjoying my Galaxy S3 since day one but that doesn’t mean that it’s a perfect device, there’s always room for improvement.

After spending months with the S3, here’s my Opinion on What I expect from the Next Galaxy S4–

Design

Samsung changed their design strategy with the Galaxy S3 – So much, so that it doesn’t even look like the successor to the S2 with respect to design.

The design may not have appealed the audience at first, including me. But believe me, it’s not easy to handle such a giant. But thanks to its rounded corners and short bezel, the phone doesn’t feel as big as it’s competition phones in overall size.

But will it carry this design strategy forward in its future devices also?

With the Note II, the Korean Manufacturer has given a slight hint that the answer maybe YES.

Screen Size and Display

I have already got a few ‘Terrible looks’ from a few people saying – Uh look, such a BIG mobile!? (I guess they haven’t seen people taking with Galaxy Notes/Tab 2!). But it’s NOT actually the people I care about.

Rumors say that the Galaxy s4 will be coming with a taller 5” screen, which may not seem to be a big jump from the S3’s 4.8” but in my opinion it’s completely UNnecessary. I’d be happy if the S4 Sports the same 4.8” screen while improving the display.

Oh wait, we haven’t talked about the display. People with Owl-like eyes were too quick to notice that the S3 came with a Pentile display and started bashing Samsung over its choice of not using the normal RBG.

Honestly, it doesn’t make any difference for an average consumer but wouldn’t we like to stay ahead in this heavy competition?

You might be aware that the Chinese Firm ‘Oppo’ has already kick started the Crazy Pixels race by announcing the Oppo’s finder 5 with over 441 Pixels Per Inch (PPI) which will easily blow away any display – including Apple’s much Hyped Retina Display with 326 PPI. Yes, Samsung should be doing pretty much something like that with FULL-HD Display (1920x1080p).

Build Quality

People have always been bashing Samsung for the quality of materials they use in their device – cheap glossy plastic, and I’ve been no exception.

I mean, just Look at HTC’s Polycarbonate One X , iPhone 5’s aluminium and glass black or even Motorola’s Kevlar Razr i and how premium they feel in Hand.

Maybe Sammy using plastic increase the durability or to reduce the overall weight for such a big phone – but hey, I don’t mind my phone gaining a bit weight to feel more premium in my hands.

I would love if the Galaxy S4 drops the use of plastic(ky) materials and stick to something more solid, which doesn’t slip from the hands like the S3.

Camera

Earlier this year, Nokia ‘revolutionized’ the Camera on a mobile device with the Pureview 808.

Less than a month ago, it took steps even further with the Lumia 920 with Optical Image Stabilization, Light sensor which can capture 5-10 times more light than any other camera phone which ultimately results in better low-light shots.

If you’re an Above-average-Geek, you might be aware that More Megapixels doesn’t always count for a better Image.

I think that Complementing a 13 MP camera with a more powerful Optical Light sensor and enhanced image processing would be the cream of the crop for Shutterbergs in The Galaxy S4.

Taking lessons from Nokia, I hope Samsung brings something Innovative in the camera field

(I’d avoid deeper digging on how Nokia faked the photos and videos, but undoubtedly Nokia’s Pureview Camera cannot be beaten by any other mobile device at least for now.).

Software

Android 4.1 JellyBean has already debuted a couple of months ago and it’s unlikely that there will be a MAJOR version release until the end of next year.

(Latest Leaks cite that Android 4.2 is underway which I believe will be a minor version upgrade and Not Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.)

So, it’ll be safe to assume that the Galaxy S4 will come with Jellybean out-of-the-box.

Of course, Manufacturer skins aren’t getting away– Expect Sammy’s proprietary ‘TouchWiz’ed’ version 5 on atop Android.

There’s little hope for Stock Android as manufacturer’s need a way of differentiating its Android device with a competitor’s Android device on Software counterpart.

With Version 4, there was a much-needed UI overhaul and it ‘stole’ some features like ‘Turning over to mute a call’ from HTC’s Sense. Actually this is the first time ever, Samsung has managed to please me with its software.

No, TouchWiz may not be the most beautiful skin available,but the features definitely more-than-compensate for it. Sammy paid attention to every little nook and corner with TouchWiz 4 which definitely delivers. Take the Pop-Up Play and live video thumbnails in the Video Player. Or the Picasa-like Face tagging, Best Photo mode in the camera.

While some may call them just gimmicks, Features like Smart Stay, Direct call and Smart Alert, I believe, give us a peek into the future and lets us experience the vast ecosystem that Android is committed to be delivering.

And, I hope Samsung adds such Unique features in the next TouchWiz as well.

Hardware

The Galaxy S3 is a already a Power House with Four Samsung’s in-house EXYNOS CPU’s screaming in the beast.

Again I’m repeating, If you are an above-average-Geek, you should  also know that a Quad Core processor doesn’t necessarily imply that it’ll be faster than Dual Core device.

What I’m Trying to Say is, Expect the Galaxy S4 to come with an ARM Cortex Dual Core A15 SoC as opposed to S3’s A9 Quad core. Speculations point towards a Mali T-604 GPU and EXYNOS 5 SoC clocked at 1.4 GHz.

It’s pretty much expected that the successor will be equipped with 2GB of RAM, as it has become a norm for most Smartphones these days.

But who knows?

New leaks indicate that The Company is testing a Device with 3Gigs of RAM, and we know Samsung is always contended to delivering the best Hardware experience but my dear,

Don’t sell Specifications; I want the Galaxy S4 to be a ‘Human Phone’ (No Pun Intended!)

Battery Life

While the Galaxy S4 most probably be thinner than the S3 but it will be interesting to see how Sammy manages to bump in more battery in such a thin space – Use the In-cell Tech Which Apple has in the iPhone 5 Maybe?

With 2100 mAh,The Galaxy S3 certainly has one of the biggest battery in the industry, but mine  still hardly powers one full day on extremely heavy usage.

While bumping in more mAh’s of battery, one should also pay attention to optimizing the software for better battery life – which Apple has proved with the iPhone 5.

The Future of S-Voice

Personal Assistants have been lately a matter of controversy and debate with regard to their real life use.

What do you think they should do with the S-voice Personal assistant app which was heavily marketed as a prime feature?

In my Opinion, they should either open up the API for developers OR completely axe it down – after all, it’s pretty much a novelty feature for showing-off to friends than any real life use.

Thanks to the presence of Google Now on Jellybean which takes the personal assistant apps to a whole new level, I’m pretty much sure I’ll not miss the badass S-voice.

Other Small Tidbits

One of my biggest gripes with the S3 is that, it doesn’t come with a Physical Dedicated Camera buttons. This may not be an issue on small phones, but it’s tough to hold a device this big in landscape mode and tap the Virtual camera button to take a picture.

Also, I bet that Sammy’s design team would be in dilemma so as whether to use a physical home button to continue the legacy the Galaxy Series started OR the On-Screen buttons first introduced in Ice-Cream-Sandwhich. I would take the On-Screen buttons any day over the Physical ones, because of the improved discover-ability of Menu Button and a quick dedicated multi-task button.

It’s obvious that it’ll be available in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions with Expandable Storage but as Sammy says, the quest is for something new, I’d love If it jumps the Bandwagon and makes a 128GB version available.

3D Technology

Lately, the world has been drooling about Glasses-Free 3D Technology in Smartphones.

I envy my friends who have the LG Optimus 3D.

We expected the S3 to come with 3D tech but The Korean giant crushed our expectations saying that – 3D isn’t mature yet.

Yes, I agree that 3D hasn’t become mainstream for smartphones, but being the leader in display Technologies, I expect the company to spark an innovation and make all our iPhone friends envy who still think that NFC and Wireless Charging hasn’t matured yet.

I am not betting on this – but still having hopes, fingers crossed!

So, When is the Next Big Thing Coming?

Rumors point towards a launch at the Mobile World Congress 2013 which is scheduled for March.

Wait, before your adrenaline starts rushing, let me tell you they are again mere spectaculations and who knows if Samsung’s decided to hold Separate Special event for the launch, just like it did with the S3?

Hardware – ARM Cortex Dual Core A15 Clocked at 1.7 GHz with 2GB of RAM and Mali T-604 GPU.

A dedicated Physical camera button, dropping the three Physical buttons and adhere to the Standards of On-screen buttons introduced in Ice Cream Sandwich.

A better build quality with Matte/Kevlar/Polycarbonate finish and scraping out Plastic materials. Storage Option of 128 GB with Expandable memory.

Camera – Primary 13MP and Secondary with 2MP with a more powerful Image sensor and enhanced Image Processing.

Design and Appearance

At first look, your eyes may get mistaken for calling it Galaxy S3. I posted a photo on Facebook and asked our fans to guess the name and to my surprise 60+ % of people commented that it is S3. It has a pebble shape and full plastic body and little bit heavier in weight than S3 and even Galaxy S.

Four inch screen isn’t edge to edge and the home button is similar to other Galaxy series phones. Thickness is exactly as the Galaxy S i9000.

Display

TFT Capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480×800 gives a superfine display. In sunlight however, it went completely dark at mid level brightness and somewhat readable in full brightness. It lacks Auto Brightness.

Interface

Galaxy S duos boasts the traditional but nice TouchWiz UI. It is easy to manage apps, create folder and navigate. I wont talk much about this because you can always install beautiful custom Android Launchers and get features that you want.

Applications

Not always does Samsung inserts bloatware on phone. On Galaxy S Duos, I found some really useful pre-installed apps. Calendar which is now called S Planner, Handy, My movies, My Music, Chat On and Samsung App Store of course.

Handy and My Movies are the most noticeable apps and useful among the list. Handy is for booking movie, train, bus and aeroplane tickets along with support for Stock investments. While My Movies lets you watch full length movies. Yes, full movie streaming without any subscription completely free.

Google Play store is always open with millions of apps to choose from.

Camera / Photo / Image Capture Quality

Rear Camera is 5 MegaPixel with LED Flash which captures 2560×1920 px photos. It has Auto Focus means you cannot touch focus but the outcome is fairly good. I compared it with the photo quality of Galaxy S i9000 which has same 5MP camera and almost similar hardware configuration.

In dim light or window sunlight room, Galaxy S Duos doesn’t capture well without Flash. And when Flash is switched ON, somewhat unnatural photo is captured. Also, colors aren’t so well recognized in absence of bright light.

In sunlight too, the colors are somewhat dull and photo has noise.

At night or while capturing objects in dark, LED flash is powerful and reaches a distance at least 4-6 feet easily. Quality of night photos can be said just fine.

Video Recording

Galaxy S Duos S7562 doesn’t support HD Videos capturing but VGA at 30 FPS. Resolution of videos captured is 640×480 in MP4 format. In bright light, quality of videos is fair and you can use LED Flash while video recording too during shooting in dark.

To be honest, Videos aren’t really appreciable.

Audio and Video Playback

Popular Audio and video formats even MKV are playable. It has one speaker at rear besides Camera which should be enough for individual listening. Headphone sound quality isn’t something to talk about.

Though, it doesn’t record HD videos but can playback full HD videos. 720p videos played smoothly while problem came when I tried 1080i videos. I tried Hardware acceleration on MX Player but still there were lags in playback. Still, the good thing is its compatibility with various video formats. If default player gives error, download MX Player.

Dual SIM Management

Galaxy S Duos S7562 is a GSM+GSM Dual SIM Dual Active Smartphone. One of a kind in this range and that too with 3G support. It can be called as the USP or X Factor of this phone, reason behind its sale.

Switching Network, Enabling or Disabling is seamless. Samsung has taken care to add this feature in notification bar itself. Dual Active feature is called as Smart Dual SIM and can be enabled optionally. Whenever one SIM is busy, we can receive call from another and the person calling will get “Waiting” tone instead of “Switch off” which happens with most of the Dual SIM Phones.

I didn’t face any issue while using this feature. And they have given option to name your SIM and icon too for easy recognition.

3G and Video Call

3G services can be accessed from any one of the SIM Network at a time. You can choose the SIM from which Data Service has to be received from “SIM Manager” in settings.

Front Camera is VGA and it is just fine for video callings. I didn’t try 3G video call but on Skype, it was fine.

Performance

With 1 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM memory, Android ICS 4.0.4 runs smooth. Multitasking was seamless. I didn’t try heavy graphics games but Contra for Android and Fruit Ninja worked fine. Still, I think it should be capable for running most of the games as hardware power is enough to cope up the load.

Battery Life

Galaxy S Duos has 1500 mAh Battery. You may feel that being a Dual SIM Android phone with 3G and 4 inch display, it won’t last long but that’s not completely true. It lasted for more than 12 hours for me with activities including 3G, Display most of time was ON as I was testing, video playback and streaming around 45 minutes and few calls of just 20 minutes.

Being Android user from last 3 years I admit that smartphones don’t offer a 2 day long battery but you can still improve it to last at least for a day. Here’s everything to know about increasing Android Battery backup and Calibration.

Conclusion

Before drawing out any conclusion, let me tell you that I bought it at a price of Rs. 15,700 from retail outlet. And I would say that it is the best and value for money phone in the market with Dual SIM functionality at the moment. If you are looking for Dual SIM active phone within 15-18K price range with standard features, Galaxy S Duos is worth every penny spent.

Motorola Razr i is a full screen (edge to edge) smartphone with a display of 4.3 inches running on Android 4.0.4 ICS. The RAZR i boasts 8MP camera which offers up to 10 shots a second, NFC capabilities and Android Beam.

The above features might not be interesting as all of them are now a standard in high end smartphones however, two things which grabs anyone’s attention are: Intel and their 2 GHz Atom chip inside.

It isn’t the first smartphone powered by Intel processor but a first with reputable manufacturing brand.

It is powered by a 2000mAh battery, claiming up to 20 hours of mixed usage time. Speaking of design, the smartphone has an aluminium frame and a Kevlar back panel. Motorola has made its own software additions including SMARTACTIONS which will trigger specific apps and the interactive Circles Widget that allows quick access to notifications, weather, time and more.

Is it Powerful than Most of the Computers / Laptops today?

No, it is not the most powerful phone out there but they didn’t detect any slowdown in the installed Android 4.04. Navigating the menus and even switching between applications were quick. In fact it felt snappier than its immediate competition.

Is Micromax Ninja Faster And Better Than Samsung Galaxy Y

Not just going by what they have advertised on Television but Specs clearly says Micromax Ninja phones are better than Galaxy Y. More Processing power obviously will make work smooth and bigger display compliments the efficiency.

Considering the price difference, one should obviously go for Ninja instead of Galaxy Y.

WAIT! One important thing in Android phones is optimization of firmware to balance processes and running services. This plays an important role while balancing or multi-tasking. I am not really sure about how Micromax has developed its firmware to manage hardware resources. If that goes wrong, every improvement on Hardware side will be pretty useless.

Android 2.2 Phone under 10K, 2.8 inch capacitive touchscreen with fair display clarity, Average Photo and Video capturing quality, 3G, WiFi and colorful back covers could be some tags to define what Huawei Ideos is all about. Let’s go in detail about each aspect of the device.

Display and Touchscreen

2.8 inches with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels which is not that enough. TFT Screen, though has wide angle viewing but it is difficult to operate in bright sunlight.

Touchscreen response is fair; You may have to press instead of just tapping and things become worst while scrolling. But, there is a good thing that you can move on screen with help of 4 way joystick button. May be Huawei was aware of this so, they introduced both touch and buttons.

Interface

Don’t know whether Huawei developed their own User Interface but it looked like Android Stock User Interface. On Homescreen, Widgets can be added just by keeping tapped at one point. App shortcuts can be added to homescreen by keeping tapped on icon in drawer and deleted by swiping them to bottom of screen.

Gallery view however is not that attractive but simple and importantly, you CANNOT browse photos by sliding finger to see next.

Web Browsing and Maps becomes mess without Pinch Zoom support.

Keyboard Touch input while in portrait mode is quite difficult owing to small screen but landscape one works just fine.

Supports Live Wallpapers out of the box which is quite uncommon for phones in this range.

Camera and Photo Quality

Video quality is just OK for viewing on small mobile screen itself. Though I recorded some clips but then concluded not to take efforts by uploading them owing to poor quality with blurs.

Media Player and Sound

Android 2.2 Music Player has a nice interface with Playlist / Artist / Albums on separate tabs. Has one speaker just besides Camera on which I didn’t go in deep but was fine. Even the headset sound quality is good.

Video Player doesn’t play HD videos and the device doesn’t have DivX support.

Application Software

Comes integrated with Document to go app for viewing and editing MS office Word / Excel sheets and PowerPoint presentations. Apart from default Google apps, Twitter, Facebook were also included.

When you have Android Market, Number of Apps given by manufacturer doesn’t matter as you have reach to huge database of millions of Android apps.

Connectivity and Web Browser

It has Wi Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS and 3G. Web browser though doesn’t support Pinch zoom but has Flash support which is another plus point.

Battery

It has a standard 1200 mAh battery and like any other Android device, Batter draining problem persists. In standby mode, it lasted for 16-18 hours.

Internal memory is 132 MB and expandable upto 32GB via microSD.

Conclusion

Not at all for Advanced user but an Average Joe will be happy and satisfied to get a good deal. Also, it is a good choice if you are looking for an Android 2.2 smartphone under 10K with standard features. It is anytime better than Galaxy 5 and Galaxy 3 which lacks Flash and Live wallpapers support in same range.
