It lets you easily find people, discover places and interests and explore photos which was tough otherwise. Like, if I want to find “Restaurants I have been to” or “Photos of me at Shimla”. Just type in those phrases and results will be displayed directly.

Not just me but it can be expanded to my friends too. Like, type in “Friends from Delhi” or “Friends who like A. R. Rehman”. Yes, there is a way to access those things manually but Graph search will make it more easy without involving clicks and visit to several pages.

Comparing with Google or any Web Search

Facebook has taken more humanistic approach while designing Graph Search. Results that come up in Search for a given topic or keyword are direct answers instead of links. I made that statement just to make a clear difference between a web Search engines like Bing and Google who offer Links as result.

Also, the way of searching is more of like asking a question to a person and not computer/machine. If you want to find people who like Nature photography, you will have to type exactly the same phrase- “friends who like nature photography” and search will include profiles you are looking for.

On other hand, if you type “Nature Photography” in Google, answers will be somewhat technical like “what is nature photography”, “How it is done” and so on.

Zuckerberg explained that Facebook is based on three pillars (at least that is his idea to complete their social platform). The first of these is the Newsfeed which gives minute by minute update in our “Walls”, the second is the Timeline, you can count on our life and experiences with a chronological order and thus make more sense. And third pillar he called- Graph Search, which arises due to the need for simple and effective searches of the social network after their users grew to the point of overcoming billion number.

But makers of Facebook are very clear that the privacy of users must be a priority in any new release. Although, Graph Search searches within these 240 billion photos and billions of users and the content they’ve shared, this engine follows three basic rules before displaying the results:

• Each content type has its own audience, not everyone is interested in the content they share.
• Most content is not public.
• We can only search in content that has been shared with us.

Especially, the last rule makes clear to us that this is to facilitate social search among our contacts and pages of our interest, we can not use Graph Search to search other users’ private content simply because nothing appears in the results.

Where It may Fail?

Unlike the demonstration, your friends may not share each and everything about them on Facebook. I will just take few examples: Even if they have visited certain place, they won’t check in those places or even if they have found watching some TV show interesting recently, they never liked that page.

So, you will never get more information on topic you are looking for if you will never get to know those friends.

In short, it all depends on “what kind of” and “how many” your friends are.

One thing is sure that Mr. Zuckerberg knows how to use the gold mine of our data they have.

The designer approached the platform from a user perspective and focused on specific and custom data while maintaining a visually appealing interface. Facebook has done a good job in this, for a long time, but we’re still not seeing the magnitude of what is possible within this powerful platform.

Fred believes that the design and development of social networking is based on the personal information on user profile. And that’s true because we are inundated with banners, advertisements including their digital signage, and other media based campaigns that disrupt user mindset.

When Will Official Facebook Windows 8 App Release?

At the moment, there are no known company plans to create its official application for Windows 8. Even though one of its major rivals in the world of social networking, Twitter has officially announced that it is developing its own application for the new system. There are was one app developed by Pearls Apps called “Facebook” in Windows 8 App store but looks like it is also removed now.

In Late 2012, conducted a Facebook and Windows 8 hackathon at their office. So, chances are that Microsoft is internally dealing with the social network, so that consumers can finally have an official Facebook application in Windows 8.

I just wish that Facebook should get inspired by this beautiful conceptual design while building an app for Windows 8 app Platform. I so loved it. Do you?

Not just background image but also it changes the style of login page. Text boxes to enter username and password are now shown in more elegant way.

It is made possible using the chrome extension called “FB Refresh” which can be downloaded for free from Chrome web store.

After installing, try opening facebook.com in new tab. You’ll notice change in the background image and position of login boxes. This is a default image which can be changed as per choice.

Click gear icon on top right of login box to access extension settings.

From FB Refresh Settings, you can specify image to be used in background. Browse the computer for image by clocking on Choose file button and wait for image upload to complete. Imgur link will appear in the box which signifies upload is complete and now you can save the changes.

You can also paste the Image URL already hosted on web.

Apart from image, there are various customization options offered by the extension. Like, you can change Facebook logo, font sizes and appearance.

Please note that these changes appear only on your computer. To be more specific- Only on the Chrome browser when extension is installed.

There is no risk in typing your username and password in this new boxes. Extension doesn’t collect user data and only responsible for visual appearance.

Stealing Photos

All those Photo collections of beautiful women and attractive girls on Porn sites and forums; Where do they come from? They are stolen from personal albums of people’s profile on Facebook and other Social networks. And without user’s consent, they are circulated on web.

Benefit: Hackers sell these photos to such websites which in again earns revenue out of it.

Solution: Photos published are usually the ones which are publicly visible on Facebook. You should take care of visibility of a content you upload on Facebook. Restrict it to “Friends Only” and choose friends wisely, learn to detect fake Facebook profiles.

Duplicate Profile

Hackers create a new profile on Facebook using the same information of an existing user. And then starts sending Friend requests to people who are friends with original profile. If you were the one to receive such request, most probably you will accept it without a second thought. Even I will, because I know that person.

Benefit: After being friends, hacker has elevated access to your personal information to steal. Also, chances are higher that you will click the links sent by your friend which may open website embedded with malware.

Solution: With such a huge friends list, we often forget if we are already friends with some person. But, if there is even 1% of doubt, double check the profile and friend list for same name. Possibly, also notify the real person about this and report the profile to Facebook.

To avoid falling prey to malicious URLs, I personally use Bitdefender to scan links on webpage for me and notify about any danger.

Track using Geo-location

With smartphones, photos captured also contain GPS log which gives out information about your location. If you happen to click a photo nearby your home and upload it on Facebook, your residence location is revealed. It becomes easy for a hacker to reach where you live.

Solution: Keep a check on visibility of Photos.

Cracking Your Account Password

Hacker may use a phishing page to steal your password or use some hacking tool to crack it. If you search on web, there are number of tools available to hack Facebook account. Most of them are fake and may be used against you. But, with a right tool, it’s all possible.

Solution: Have a strong password for Facebook account. You may use one of the password generators to create an unbreakable one.

Still, if hacker manages to hack your account, learn to get back hacked Facebook account.

Using Facebook Apps

Little knowledge is what all you need to create a Facebook application. Hacker creates application with tempting name and content. Maybe revealing some secret about you or offering an iPhone for 50 bucks. On allowing apps, they could fetch all personal information about you. Some apps pretend to be a Free Game but ask for Credit Card information to start playing. Avoid them!

Whatever happens, you are responsible for your account and its protection. I have listed the most used ways to manipulate users but they may come up with some more innovative technique to exploit Facebook. So, you always have to take necessary security precautions while using Facebook.

1. Log Out Facebook

In rare of the rare case, you still love Facebook too much, go and Deactivate your account. Do this when you are at work or have something at hand, even if it is a movie you are watching. Post a message to all that you are frustrated with Facebook and taking a break so not to disturb you. If you start doing this, after initial ridicule by friends all will accept it. So you will not get notifications also that something is going on in Facebook.

That’s all I can suggest you to help keep you out of the evil behavior called Facebook addiction. Nonetheless, it should always be kept in mind, if you really want to get over this addiction be sure you want to do it. If you are not aware that you are addicted and not conscious enough that you got to leave it, not even angles or witches can make you do it.

Stopping Spam on Facebook Timeline is a need of hour. Social Network is widely exploited in various ways to spread spam but the fact is we are responsible for it. So, stop acting as spam agents and stop spamming on Facebook Friends and Timeline.

From my Facebook Experience, I have compiled some common ways using which Spam is generally spread.

Facebook App Spam

Apps are the prime source of spamming. Here are some examples of spam on Facebook:

1. Notification Spam: App might send request to all your friends, maybe without your permission.

2. Facebook Wall Spam: App will send invite or share some link on Friend’s wall.

Facebook Applications are built by people like you and me. So, Facebook isn’t responsible for everything that happens between you and app. Trusting blindly on all apps would be a mistake and hence preliminary care should be taken to avoid sorry at later stage.

Facebook cares about its user base and hence offers some actions which has to be to optionally taken by you in order to avoid spam. Whenever you use any app, you need to first authorize it and then start using it.

Here’s a checklist which you should always go through:

1. Who are Using it?

Maybe zillions of people are using it but check out how many of your friends are using it. More specifically “Who they are?”. If someone who you believe or you think is tech-savvy and decisive enough to judge apps then that adds to trust factor of app.

2. What Information you are giving out to this App?

Generally includes Basic info like name, profile picture and other things that you have made public. But look out for more. Some apps could dig out your more information like Phone number, Email ID, Birthdays, etc.

3. Who can see what this app posts?

After checking out first two steps, if you are somewhat convinced to use any app, this is an important step. Mainly because, here you are permitting app to publish and post something on your timeline on your behalf (maybe without your consent).

So, control who could see what this app posts on timeline. It is recommended to use Privacy setting as “Me” because even if app posts something, you will get to know and good thing it will be visible to only yourself.

This you could come to know how culprit your app is. Notice the slant lines around the box which signifies post is only visible to me. So, even this app tried to post spam on my timeline, my friends didn’t get harmed.

Irrelevant Photo Tagging

Enough of blaming apps for spam, sometimes our stupidity also leads to spam. People keep on tagging their friends in an irrelevant photos and the reasons are:

1. They want to send wishes for an occasion (might be Christmas).
2. Want to show off something they bought or something hilarious they did.
3. They want you to notice and read.
4. They just want to increase number of Likes.

In reality, what you get is bulk notification about the comments on a photo in which you weren’t even present.

If you are the one who is doing it then here are alternative solutions:

1. Send Them a Message.
2. Write on their wall.
3. Tag then in Comments. (This doesn’t send notification for each activity)
4. Make your post “Like”worthy.

If you are victim of photo tags then:

1. Go to Photo and remove your tag instantly. This will save you from further notifications and also spamming timeline.
2. Change Tagging options from Privacy Settings.
   

These settings will let your friends tag you but you will only see what they have tagged. Also, you can setup Review Tags before they are actually visible to everyone. This would prevent from irrelevant tag and photo tag will be only where you are actually present in photo.

Facebook announced this feature as an opt-in feature, but recently it has imposed this feature for everyone, whether you like it or not. I know that many of you will like this email service, but you really haven’t thought about it.

Why yourname@facebook.com is Not Good For You And Your Privacy?

Consider that your email address is like above mentioned address.

Now this one goes for Girls- If you have a stalker or ex-boyfriend (not me of course). He does know your name, it means he knows your email address: yourname@facebook.com. Now, you can either workaround finding who the hell is sending you weird messages from unknown email id or you can hide your facebook email id from your so called facebook timeline.

This one goes for everyone, as many of us thinks that it’s just an email what the hell can be done with it. Since the email id for Facebook is so easy that a 3 year old child can guess it, so it’s easier to contact anyone (Say a movie star).

Now if anyone wanted to play some kind of prank which can be funny (if he’s your friend) or frustrating for you and your family. He can do so by sending you message like “what was I doing in your bed last night?” and you can think many other situations similar to this.

It simply becomes a data mine for email harvesters to spam your inbox.

Why I haven’t Switched to @Facebook Email ID

As said by Lifehacker, you should not put all eggs in one basket and must keep things on Internet separately.

Facebook believes that most conversations with friends are on-the-fly, short, real-time conversations, which is why they’re not terribly concerned with making Facebook Messages work like email. All they’re doing is making sure it works with email.

Still, if you do, you won’t be allowed to access your mails on Work and the reason is simple- Network firewall where facebook.com is blocked.

How To Remove/Hide Your Facebook Email Address From Your Timeline

• Sign in to your Facebook account.
• Now visit your profile page by clicking on your profile pic at the top right corner.
• Open the About section and scroll down to see Contact Info.

• Click on Edit to edit your contact information.

• Now on the right of the Email tab, next to the Facebook email account id, click on the drop down menu to choose disable on timeline.
• To check whether the email id appears on your timeline or not, kindly go to your timeline.
